My Everyday with My Morrie: Critique Paper

The passage is all about the character of Mitch Albom's book "Tuesdays with Morrie" and how the writer, Mrs. Agaton had her "own" Morrie. The passage is written by Mrs. Priscilla Agaton and she entitled it "My Everyday with My Morrie". The author shared her thoughts and insights about the Morrie and what made her own Morrie like her.

In the passage, the writer's tone is serious and emotional as she talks about how amazing and inspiring the real Morrie is and how her own Morrie was alike her. The writer talks about her fond memories of her own Morrie and her emotions and words shows how unforgettable she is and how precious her own Morrie is. The emotions in the passages suits it well and makes the passage more relatable and interesting for the readers.

The article is written for her friend, Lolita Cabangbang. But it is also written for people as an inspiration for those who also has their special friend that touched and changed their lives and perspective. The writer elaborates her memories of her, words of wisdom of her friend, views on the education system and evrything that makes her a lovely and amazing person. The writer also stated how she regret and how she felt sad when her friend passed away but even though she died, she had left something in her that would not be gone forever.

As I read the passage, I was not lost at all since the passage was well written. I really like the passage since it had moved and inspired me making me wish for my own Morrie. I hoped to find someone like her who would touch and change my life for a lifetime.

The Great Escape at Baguio City

Travelling is the best way to relieve stress and escape the chaotic life in the city. And I think the best place to shake that stress away is in the “Summer Capital of the Philippines”, Baguio City. Whenever I think of Baguio, I always thought of its cold temperature, pine trees and strawberries. Despite having many pride and things Baguio is known for, I can’t help but thing of those three things alone while imagining that I will be able to visit Baguio City. And I eventually did Last November 29-30, 2015. Although my uncle was there for a seminar, we did not waste the opportunity to have our vacation even with just a short period of time. And I must say that I didn’t waste any precious time that time because I believed that time is gold so I just enjoyed it in the nick of time. And now let me tell you about my trip at Baguio and how it became my Great Escape.

Our first stop is Burnham Park which is located at the heart of Baguio City. The park was named after its designer, Daniel Burnham. The park has been the favorite place of residents and visitors that visit Baguio City. I would admit that despite visiting it for just one day, I loved it already and what I loved the most about it is the different facilities for recreation and relaxation that are present in the park. I loved how the park gives off the modern yet nature loving vibe. Trees and flowers are seen everywhere giving off the tranquil and sweet aroma in the premise. In just seeing such view made my heart happy and made the butterflies in my stomach go wild. I never expected that just by sitting and relaxing in the park could make my eyes glimmer in delight. It’s unfortunate that time fly’s past and I needed to leave already. But if I’d have the chance I would and should visit it again.

After strolling around the blissful yet tranquil park, our next stop is The Baguio Cathedral. Baguio Cathedral is the biggest catholic church in Baguio and is the center of religious activities where almost 10, 000 of devotees visited during Holy Week seasons. It is fascinating and heartwarming to visit such kind of place especially seeing families bonded together by love and care. Families gather together at the church despite not having mass since being religious runs in the family. The church is unique and popular with its twin spires, rose colored exterior, traditional stained glass and long concrete stairway having more than hundred steps. The view deck is known as the favorite spot for visitors and locals and it is my favorite part as well since it overlooks all the other special places in the city which were Burnham Park, Camp Allen and City Hall of the City. The church really had a big part in my heart and I would recommend people to come in there and witness personally its captivating beauty. Our first day ended with visiting such places and we would visit some other places on our second day before leaving.

On the second day of our trip, we head out early so that we would see all the places we were planning to visit before going home. We first went to meet pink cuties which are the strawberries. I really loved strawberries that seeing them made me crave and see myself salivating profusely from the sight of it. We head to a strawberry farm and was given a chance to pick them on our own. While picking strawberries, my eyes are shining like stars due to the happiness I’ve been feeling inside but though I am excited, I touched and picked them gently as if I am holding a baby. Not only strawberries are inside the strawberry farm but there is also strawberry ice cream, strawberry jam and strawberry taho that we tried eagerly and bought eventually. Aside from strawberry products, they also have peanut brittle and sundot kulangot sold inside. It was fun seeing strawberries as well as having a taste of its sweet and sour taste that lingers in one’s mouth. Eating is fun and it is my favorite thing of all I had done. It is sad and unfortunate but we needed to leave the strawberry babies behind but I would not leave without bringing back home one and we bought quite plenty of it.

If you were looking for a serene place where you could talk to God in private then our next destination is the best for you and our destination is at Pink Sister Convent. Visiting Pink Sister Convent made me reflect on many things where I realized quite a lot on my life and I also found solitude in it. I also loved how the church was colored pastel pink where it seemed girly but it has the vibe where you could have soul-searching away from the chaotic scene of Baguio City. Another thing that I loved about The Pink Sisters Convention is the writing of prayer intentions on small piece of paper and drops it into the wooden boxes. I loved how the nuns would pray for each and everyone’s prayers. Through visiting the convent, I felt something inside me changed and something inside me was fulfilled and I knew it was due to God’s grace.

As they say it, save the best for last and so we visited last the Mansion. The Mansion is the official summer residence of the President of the Philippines. It is located on the eastern part of the city right across from Wright Park. The Mansion has been the most visited and photographed landmarks of Baguio since it holds all the former president’s memorabilia and works of art over the years. But what is difficult with visiting The Mansion is the restriction of guests coming inside since a contingent of Philippine marines maintains the security of this large compound and some of them would be seen manning the guardhouse at the vicinity of the gate. But at least you can enjoy feasting your eyes with such view with some souvenir pictures of it also. I really hoped to celebrate Panagbenga Festival at Baguio but it’s unfortunate that we visited on November since Panagbenga is celebrated during the month of February. But I will make sure that I would and should be back in here to explore more lovable things about Baguio. After such great experience, we are needed to come back home again and be back from the reality of our lives. In a short period of time, I was thankful to know more about Baguio and what’s in it. If I need some Great Escape again I would not think of other places other than Baguio, because “I love Baguio”.

Ka Bel

I've realize how important to the worker or labourers to show them that they are important. They have right to have a their own rights being a worker.

House on the Zapote Street

In the house on the zapote street gave me lesson that you have to learn how to let go in your life. Just like in the story Pablo has a huge affection to Lydia that lead to ruin her life.

Critique Paper (Puppy Love)

REMINISCE
Francisco Sionil José, is a writer known for his skills in writing in English and for his famous works, and one of the most widely known Filipino writers. Francisco’s novels, short stories and non-fictions works always highlights or always has the class struggles or the hierarchy between the rich and the poor, or the colonized and the one who colonized them. As for this critique paper, it will only tackle Francisco Sionil José’s short story, Puppy Love. Puppy Love is a romance short story with a pinch of dark genre which portrays the struggles or the class level of Filipinos after being colonized and how love is always unpredictable. The story always revolves around the reminiscing long gone memories which could never once again, happen, which leads to the main point of the story; Love always gives long-lasting memories.
Throughout the story, Jacobo always reminisce or remembers his time with the one he loved and the one he had been looking for, Gina. Jacobo was always chasing after Gina, or to be more specific, his time or memories with Gina that he would very much would like to go back to. But nevertheless, Jacobo never forgot or strayed from his path and climbed the hierarchy ladder though sheer hard work and through a series of connections. He managed to have business relation with a top brass company all to find and help Gina and her brother whom suffered from the after-effects of colonization.
Puppy love was a good short story. It is not the usual cliché type of story which ends in a happy ending for the main characters. First, it will have a happy atmosphere and then suddenly, there is death, war, and separation of love ones. Usually, it will end with a happily ever after that we always know in the Disney princess fairytales. But in this story, it took a real take on the situation and showed how cruel the world can be for the unfortunate and to those bound by unavoidable circumstances. An example of this is how Gina’s family was in a huge debt leading for the downfall of her family and this it is not the typical story that I read. It gives a new feeling that makes you want more of it because of its unique plot or storyline.
Despite the story being short, it shows a good character development for the two main characters in the story which I think is very important when making a story. Character development has always been a must in a story that has a tragic beginning because it shows how the character grows from that experience and gives a sense of thrill. Going back to puppy love, the main characters both had a tragic event which led to them being separated and further develop their selves. Jacobo, a poor boy, always following on the tracks of Lito had developed into an independent man. Gina, an easy-going, literature-loving, girl had developed into a poor girl exposed to the cruelty of the world. These developments had always been one to look forward to because it begs the question as to what happened and why it happened making audience curious and gives satisfaction after that curiosity is sated.
For the plot of the story. At first, this story might seem like it will be a love story between Gina and Jacobo, but while progressing further in the story, it will change from a happy love story, into a tragic event happening after one another, for Gina that is. Personally, I liked how the author gives a dark plot in the story because it mirrors how cruel and unforgiving it was back in the days of colonization that shows how much information the author has on this certain topic making it relatable for people who experienced the so called “puppy love” which I think is great because it will be relatable for both the old and the young generations. The last thing to point out in the plot is that the ending of the story will leave you hanging as to what will happen next. It is like a cliffhanger which will not have a sequel which for me is very disappointing because I really liked the story and I atleast want to see a proper ending in such a beautiful story and not end when the one we were waiting for finally happened e.g. Gina finally recognizing Jacobo. The style used in the story is a narrative style with a First-Person perspective. Narrative style was used because it is narrating a story about how Jacobo’s life went and his relation with Gina and Lito. For Puppy Love, the story revolves around Jacobo and his search for a long-lost memory and how he progress through a series of events in his life. As to how it was told, or narrated, it used a first person point of view. First person gives the audience to know what the characters feel making the story more dramatic or comedic depending on what type of character it is.
The author has done great in portraying what Puppy love is. It gives an understanding on this topic because the story revolved around Jacobo following an intense feeling to do certain things only to realize that it was just puppy love in the end. This story will be useful to people who still has no idea what love is and might give pointers as to how they should react when they are in this phase of love.

For me I like the story of “Puppy Love” because like I said earlier, has a unique plot which keeps you wanting more and more and because of its unpredictability keeping you at the edge of your seat wanting to know what will happen next and the surprise you’ll get from not expecting the outcome which gives you a plethora of emotions that is always welcome when making the audience feel the characters as you want them to be. Next, is the development of the main characters, making you curious as to how the events will affect the mentality of the characters which had always been one to look forward to. Lastly, the fact that it tackles the struggle Filipinos went to after the colonization gives it another point for me because I love how the author perfectly blended it with the topic “Puppy Love” making the story accessible for all ages be it old or young, this story will be relatable. And that ending, makes me curious as to what will happen next. Any ending will be better than ending it at what seemed like a climax of a story. I think how Francisco ended his story is quit satisfying for the reader when they read his story.

Monyeka

I learned to this story is that you can sacrifice everything for the sake of your family even if it's your own happiness. Also, I learn how to appreciate things even if it's the smallest thing.

Free Verse

Heartsrings

Soaring to the skies above
Eyes filled with bliss and love
Unattached strings and open cages
A book with half written pages

Arms open widely
As the river moves flowy
The rustling trees whisper
With soft voices as they shiver

A never witnessed emotion
 Hands overwhelmed with passion
Heaven seemingly temporary
With winds flowing passively

Standing above all creation
Fills my eyes with wonder and fascination
A place so impeccable and pure
Slaving me with its allure

A never-ending view
Coloring the world with its blue hue
Like the river beneath me,
Beautiful and serene as all can see

Eyes closed in a fantasy
Where I flow freely
Treasures filled with content
Finally I am complacent
